The anti-5G movement is a new form of fearmongering

5G

Over the past few months, you may have noticed Kingston yard signs advertising the following: “NO SMALL CELL ANTENNAS! OUR KIDS LIVE HERE! STOP 5G!”

That notion has no factual basis, and it prevents Kingston from moving forward with technology that can improve our daily lives.

Here’s what you need to know about 5G (fifth-generation mobile wireless) and why the anti-5G movement has become yet another scaremongering effort grounded in misinformation and fake news.

5G networks resemble 3G and 4G technologies in that they’re wireless networks that allow subscribers to access mobile Internet. The difference is that 5G uses higher frequencies than its precursors, allowing more devices to connect simultaneously at much faster speeds—more than 10 times faster than the current 4G networks.

The electromagnetic waves in 5G networks travel shorter distances, so more transmitters are required, and they must be installed closer to ground level.

Some worry that installing these transmitters closer to households will expose residents to harmful radio waves that may negatively impact their health, leading to the spread of anti-5G signs throughout Kingston. But humans are already exposed to a wide range of electromagnetic fields, from low-frequency non-ionizing radiation, such as radio waves and microwaves, to high-frequency ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.

In general, high-frequency ionizing rays can cause harm, as they can damage DNA and lead to cellular damage. This is the case with ultraviolet rays from the sun, hence the need for sunscreen in the summertime.

However, the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from 5G networks operate through non-ionizing rays at a frequency much lower than visible light, with which we interact on a daily basis. Our exposure to radio waves may increase slightly with 5G compared to the exposure related to current 4G networks. However, the EMFs associated with 5G networks are still well below the harmful range of the electromagnetic spectrum.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use,” while the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”—in the same category as pickled vegetables and aloe vera. As Alex Hern from The Guardian notes, “5G is no more a weapon of war than a Wi-Fi router is a microwave oven—even though both those products use the same part of the spectrum, around the 2.4Ghz mark.”

KFL&A Public Health also answers frequently asked questions about the health effects of exposure to EMFs, which, according to scientific literature, are nonexistent. In spite of this, many anti-5G groups are using social media platforms such as Facebook to spread propaganda and organize events and protests to support their cause. These platforms often enable the sharing of misinformation—nowadays referred to as “fake news”—as it can be difficult to differentiate reliable sources from erroneous clickbait stories.

The creation of anti-5G Facebook groups further contributes to the propagation of this fake news, as they omit any corrective research and evidence. All it takes is a quick scroll through groups such as “5G – The Facts” or “Stop 5G Canada” to stumble upon countless alarmist claims and conspiracies.

One such group is the local Kingstonians for Safe Technology (K4ST), who are concerned about the health risks related to the increased frequencies of EMFs in 5G networks. More specifically, K4ST wrongfully claims that exposure to 5G “can cause cancer, neurological problems and other serious health effects.” Their website even has a whole section dedicated to electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), which is associated with a vast assortment of self-reported symptoms, although the WHO explicitly states that “there is no scientific basis to link EHS symptoms to EMF exposure.”

However, K4ST is not the only one opposing the development of 5G networks. European telecommunication companies are also facing pushback as organized anti-5G protests have taken place across the continent, regardless of the lack of scientific evidence to back their claims. On a broader scale, the vast benefits of new 5G technology have been and continue to be overshadowed by false claims.

Some groups go as far to claim 5G is part of a mind control experiment, or that it will allow foreign governments to spy on our population. Some of these fears may even be related to the North American trend of scapegoating other countries, as Chinese company Huawei Technologies Inc. was selected to develop Canada’s 5G networks. This type of skepticism is reminiscent of other recent sensationalist groups, such as the “anti-vax” movement, which spreads misinformation about vaccines despite overwhelming scientific evidence that vaccines can help protect individuals and prevent disease outbreaks within vaccinated populations.

When we neglect to verify the credibility of sensational information, we risk losing out on technologies and scientific breakthroughs that would otherwise increase our quality of life. Overall, not only are fears over 5G networks unfounded, but their benefits are remarkable. 5G networks allow for obvious tech advancements such as faster downloads, browsing, and streaming. Even more than that, they will also enable the interconnectedness of technologies for greater accessibility, prevention methods, and much more. This includes technologies such as automated cars, forest fire detection tools, healthcare monitoring devices, and quality control systems. This concept is commonly dubbed the Internet of Things, or the ability to seamlessly connect our devices and information systems.

It’s easy to fall prey to the false rhetoric surrounding 5G, but when you look at the facts, this revolutionary new technology can only really make our lives better.

Manoj Srivastava elaborates on how vastu can help in reducing stress and health issues caused by modern technology

In the modern world, stress is often synonymous with your professional life. Usually, this part is relegated to working in the office, dealing with bosses and colleagues as well as being productive. At the end of the day, home is where you disengage and relieve yourself from the daily grind. However, home, too, has its own set of stresses, like meeting the expectations of spouse, parents, and children. On top of all this, there are unavoidable invisible energies caused by modern technology at both home and office, which amplifies the stress. This creates a runaway effect where stress spirals out of control, and you end up being burnt out as a result. This is why it’s important to manage both your space and time.

Most of us are used to the electronic conveniences of modern life. However, few of us are aware of the possible health risks presented by the gadgets that make our world work. We are surrounded by electromagnetic radiation, whether at home or office. Electromagnetic frequencies are generated by all electronic and electrical devices. Mobile phones, wi-fi routers, microwave ovens, laptops, televisions, and cordless phones are some of the devices that are now prevalent in every Indian household and that generate EMF radiations as long as they are operational. In offices, servers, UPS, wi-fi access points, and mobile towers are great sources of high EMF radiation to which we are continually exposed.

All subtle energies, be it the energies of Vastu or electromagnetic radiation, have a deeper and prolonged effect on our mind and body. On one hand, while gross energy like sound, light, and wind have acute and temporary effects, subtler energies have chronic and long-term effects. While vastu energies can be good and bad, in different directions and at parts, depending on the design of the building, the EMF energies are uniformly bad in all places.

When exposed to these EMF radiations, different people have different symptoms depending upon their vitality and constitution. The most prominent symptoms are disturbed sleep, anxiety, palpitations, headaches, lethargy, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and nausea. Most people may define the collection of these diseases as high stress. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has coined a new term for people who are more susceptible to the effects of EMF radiation — electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Prolonged exposure can result in lower immunity, reproductive and fertility issues, auto-immune diseases, and some malignant diseases. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai submitted a report to the Government of India in 2010 highlighting the effect of mobile tower radiation, and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has also defined protocols and design guidelines to reduce the impact of EMF on residents and workers, and both these documents are easily available on the internet.

These radiations are caused by modern technology, and stopping the use of these gadgets is not practical. These days, our efficiency depends on the use of these gadgets. Even if you stop using them, you will still be continually exposed to mobile tower radiation, radio-frequency waves from microwave and radio towers, and, in some cases, the neighbor’s Wi-Fi routers.

Since avoiding these radiations is not possible, the author suggests prudence in the use of this equipment. For example, you keep your mobile handset more than seven feet from where you sleep and do not install the wi-fi router or television set in your bedroom. In case the television set is already installed in the bedroom, and for some reason, you cannot shift it elsewhere, you should switch off the TV from the mains and not from the remote before you sleep. Do not be near the microwave oven when it is operational. Keep at least 10 feet or more distance from the same. Do not operate the laptop by placing it on your lap. Try to switch off the mobile phone and wireless router during the night by routing your calls on the good old landline phone at your bedside.

If you are hypersensitive to electromagnetic radiation, there are shielding paints available in international markets that can be applied to the outer walls of the building to prevent mobile tower radiation from entering the building. However, the disadvantage is that mobile signals weaken inside the building, causing network connectivity issues. In the modern way of working, this may be unacceptable.

Modern Vastu experts have another way to neutralize the effect of these radiations. Specific materials, angles, and geometric shapes can be installed at strategic locations in the building to harmonize the effect of these radiations on residents.

Irrespective of your sensitivity to electromagnetic radiations, we are all continuously exposed to them, especially in urban cities, and they are affecting our psyche and body energy to one level or another. Some precautions and vastu rectifications will definitely reduce its negative effect.

The Effects of Exposure to Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields in the Treatment of Migraine Headache: A Cohort Study

5G

What is an electromagnetic headache?

Also, some people have claimed that they have electromagnetic hypersensitivity and experience some symptoms, such as headaches, tinnitus, sleep disorders, and other neurological complaints when exposed to these fields. Overall, headache is the most frequent symptom induced by RF-EMF.

Findings have indicated that increased mobile phone usage may be concomitant with a higher rate of headache attacks due to low radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). This study aimed to determine the effects of low RF-EMF on the treatment outcome in migraine patients.

Findings have indicated that increased mobile phone usage may be concomitant with a higher rate of headache attacks due to low radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of low RF-EMF on the treatment outcome in migraine patients. Based on the mentioned facts, RF-EMF can be regarded as a probable environmental trigger for migraine headaches. Such issues will raise the question of what the potential effect of this environmental risk factor would be on the patient’s response to treatment regimens.

Based on the mentioned facts, RF-EMF can be regarded as a probable environmental trigger for migraine headaches. Such issues raise the question of what the potential effect of this environmental risk factor would be on the patient’s response to treatment regimens. Usually, its severity affects individuals’ daily performance capabilities and functions. Although several studies have been carried out to explain the pathophysiologic mechanism of migraine, it has, in general, remained an enigma. However, most researchers believe that the disturbance of the neuro-electrical activity related to brain cells increases the sensitivity of the cerebral cortex and brain vascular changes with potential genetic susceptibility factors and plays an important role in migraine headaches. To initiate and accelerate these events, some environmental and behavioral factors act as potent triggers for migraine attacks.

Recently, an epidemiologic study indicated a higher occurrence of migraine attacks in mobile users. The matter has created genuine concern regarding the extensive exposure of individuals to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) due to the worldwide comprehensive expanse of mobile telecommunication technology. There are some suggested hypotheses that electromagnetic waves affect various aspects of human physiology by interaction with cellular electromagnetic events. One of the most important alterations induced by electromagnetic fields is the disturbance in brain function because of the close contact of these devices to the head. Previous studies have shown that these waves influence regional cerebral blood flow and electroencephalographic (EEG) wave power.

Health Implications of 5G Exposure

5G technology

As 5G technology proliferates globally, concerns about its health implications have become a central point of discussion among scientists, healthcare providers, and the public. This article examines the potential health risks associated with 5G technology, compares these risks to previous generations of cellular technology, and discusses current research and expert opinions on the matter.

Understanding 5G and Its Exposure Levels

5G technology uses higher frequency bands than previous generations, which include the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. These high-frequency waves can transmit large amounts of data faster and with lower latency but have a shorter range and lower penetration capabilities compared to lower-frequency waves. The exposure to these high frequencies has raised concerns about potential health impacts, especially given their novel application in consumer devices and infrastructure.

Potential Health Risks

The primary concern with 5G exposure revolves around the potential for increased radiation absorption in human tissues:

  • Skin Absorption: Early studies suggest that mmWave frequencies tend to be absorbed by the skin’s surface layers, potentially affecting the skin and eyes due to their superficial penetration.
  • Thermal Effects: There is concern about the thermal effects of prolonged exposure to high-frequency waves, which can cause tissue heating and may lead to adverse health effects.
  • Systemic Impact: While the long-term systemic impacts of 5G are still under study, preliminary research indicates potential effects on immune and neurological function.

Comparative Analysis with Previous Generations

While previous cellular network generations (like 3G and 4G) have been studied more extensively, the shift to higher frequencies with 5G necessitates new research paradigms. Past studies on 3G and 4G highlighted concerns over possible links to conditions such as headaches, cognitive dysfunction, and even cancer, but the evidence was not conclusive. The higher frequency and intensity of 5G exposure call for renewed scrutiny and updated methodologies to ensure public safety.

Current Research and Expert Opinions

Ongoing research into 5G’s health effects is mixed, with some studies indicating minimal risk while others suggest potential harm. Institutions like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) are closely monitoring these developments. The WHO has categorized all radiofrequency radiation (which includes mobile phone frequencies) as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B), indicating that there is a potential risk that needs further investigation.

Regulatory and Health Advisory Responses

Regulatory bodies worldwide are updating their guidelines to address potential risks associated with 5G:

  • Safety Standards: Updated safety standards are being implemented, which consider the specific absorption rate (SAR) values of devices and infrastructure.
  • Public Health Guidelines: Health authorities are developing guidelines that recommend minimizing exposure, especially for vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women.
  • Regulatory Capture: Kennedy highlighted the extensive control that large corporations, especially within the telecommunications sector, exert over regulatory bodies such as the FCC and FDA. This control results in lax enforcement and regulations that favor industry interests over public health [5].
  • Media Influence: Significant advertising spending by telecommunications giants effectively silences negative media coverage about EMF pollution, leading to a lack of public awareness and understanding of the associated health risks [5].
  • Health Risks and Public Ignorance: There is a strong scientific consensus about the harmful effects of EMF exposure, including cancer, neurological disorders, and immune system disruption. However, the public remains largely unaware or dismissive of these risks, partly due to media manipulation and the convenience provided by wireless technologies [5].
  • Litigation and Advocacy: Kennedy discusses ongoing legal battles aimed at challenging regulatory failures and pushing for stricter EMF exposure guidelines. These include suits against both the government and private corporations for failing to protect public health [5].
  • Policy and Personnel Changes: The summit emphasized the need for sweeping changes in the staffing and policy direction of regulatory agencies to combat the issue of regulatory capture. This includes replacing industry-affiliated personnel with experts who prioritize public health [5].
  • Global Impact and Environmental Concerns: The unchecked proliferation of telecommunications infrastructure, including satellites, poses significant threats not only to human health but also to wildlife and ecosystems. There is a call for comprehensive environmental assessments and stricter global regulations [5].
  • Medical Gaslighting: Individuals reporting symptoms related to EMF exposure often face dismissal and skepticism from the medical community, a phenomenon Kennedy identifies as a form of medical gaslighting. This systemic issue needs addressing through better education and awareness in the healthcare industry [5].

These insights highlight the critical need for regulatory reform, increased public engagement, and stronger advocacy to mitigate the impacts of EMF pollution and ensure that technological advancements do not come at the expense of public health and ecological integrity.

Conclusion

The health implications of 5G technology are a complex and evolving area of study. As this technology becomes more widespread, it is crucial that rigorous, independent research continues to monitor its health impacts. Public policy and health advisories will need to adapt based on these findings to safeguard public health while harnessing the benefits of 5G’s advancements.

5G concerns: Citizens call on Kings County councillors to declare moratorium

council

Presenters say technology shouldn’t go to market until scientifically proven safe.

According to COLDBROOK, N.S. — “It’s invisible, silent, odourless and you can’t get away from it.” This is how presenters to Kings County council’s committee of the whole meeting describe the radiofrequency electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from wireless technology that has become a part of most people’s everyday lives.

Andrea Schwenke Wyile of Wolfville Ridge and Glenda Pavelich of Wolfville, representing Atlantic Canadians for Safe Technology, made a presentation to councillors on Jan. 19.

They called on council to exercise the precautionary principle and to join other Canadian and world municipalities in declaring a moratorium on so-called 5G or fifth generation wireless technology in the municipality until it’s scientifically proven safe.

They also called on councillors to do their own research on the topic to better educate themselves on potential negative consequences.

Schwenke Wyile said they aren’t experts, but concerned citizens who have been looking into the matter. She said EMF exposures have increased exponentially since they began raising awareness in the early 2000s.

“I now know many more people with microwave sickness, some of whom can no longer come to the Valley because of already high levels of radiation,” Schwenke Wyile said.

She said 5G raises “alarming concerns” for the health of all living beings and will further erode our privacy. She called wireless an “energy hog” that would consume more and more energy as the technology evolves.

Conflicting studies

Schwenke Wyile pointed to “tens of thousands of independent, peer-reviewed scientific studies”, some dating back more than half a century, “showing clear evidence of harm from non-native and non-ionizing electromagnetic and radio frequencies.” She said this evidence has been “suppressed and dismissed in the name of industry profit.”

She pointed to data compiled by Dr. Henry Lai at the University of Washington that indicates 70 per cent of non-industry studies demonstrate the harmful effects of EMF exposure while 68 per cent of industry studies show no effect.

Schwenke Wyile said precautionary measures should be taken, even if some cause and effect situations aren’t established scientifically.

She said one simple solution would be to go back to hard-wired internet connections using fibre optic cable, which don’t generate unhealthy levels of EMF exposure. She said this would be safer for our health and privacy.

Invasive infrastructure?

Pavelich said 5G would require hundreds of thousands of small cell towers, one approximately every 150 metres, and pointed to studies showing that property values drop in the vicinity of cell towers.

She said a moratorium should be placed until Health Canada conducts a scientific study of the health and economic ramifications of the technology that demonstrates its safety. Pavelich said the wireless industry also has to take responsibility and prove the technology is safe before it’s released to the market. Therefore, it is important to put Kings County on the map as a municipality willing to step forward advocating for the health of its plants, insects and human residents.

She said they’re also calling for a change to legislation requiring more transparency and notification to local communities — and consent from municipal governments — when it comes to the installation of 5G. According to Pavelich, as far as they know, 5G technology has yet to roll out in Nova Scotia. Schwenke Wyile said they are aware that some small cell antennas have already been installed in Kings County but not activated. However, there are people in the community who have long been negatively impacted by wireless technology.

Schwenke said that there are people who would have presented to council this morning who cannot come into this room, and you’ve been hearing from these people for 20 years.

Feeling the effects

One such individual is Barbara Lake, who sent a letter to council regarding the 5G presentation. The Steam Mill resident said she has been disabled by wireless frequencies. This sensitivity became apparent after a cell tower was placed 1,052 feet behind her family’s Wolfville Ridge property in 2001.

Lake said her two youngest children became extremely ill within months of the tower’s activation. They had to abandon their home and moved 14 times before finding a home “safe enough to live what was left of our lives.”

She said even passing cars with active wireless technology cause her to endure physical and emotional trauma that “anyone would call torture.”

“This torture is sometimes so unbearable that I have to seek emergency medical care and call 911,” Lake said.

She said she experienced two such incidents in 2020 after a cell tower was sited not far from her home, even though she protested the location and provided a letter from her doctor in support of her concerns.

Lake has added her voice to those calling on the municipality to place a moratorium on 5G technology, which she described as “the most powerful and destructive wireless frequencies known to man” and which “have never been proven safe.”

Would a moratorium work?

Mayor Peter Muttart told the presenters that council would take the presentation under advisement and that they would make their own enquiries.

Following the presentation, Muttart said that communications are a federal government jurisdiction. If council were to declare a moratorium on 5G technology, “it would simply be persuasive” in terms of a position to be taken with the federal government. It would not be legally enforceable.

“While it’s clear they ask the municipality to declare a moratorium, I take the application, at the end of the day, to be an application to inspire the councillors of the day to educate themselves as to the science with respect to 5G technology,” Muttart said.

He said it seems that the issue some people have with fifth-generation wireless technology is that it could generate EMF exposures in excess of what is considered safe.

Muttart said the presenters are aware that the Municipality of Kings is actively working to provide wider fibre optic cable connectivity directly to homes and businesses. Since fibre-to-the-premises is not a wireless technology, it doesn’t present the same concerns about overexposure to EMF.

He said if the municipality were to take a position of any sort, it would have to be based upon forming the view after embarking on a great deal of education that the range for safe EMF exposure levels set by the federal government is not low enough.

However, Muttart said they, like the majority of the population, have yet to embark on that education. People tend to rely on senior government decisions and the science behind those decisions.

Safety Code 6

Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 is a document that sets out recommended safety limits for human exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the frequency range from three kHz to 300 GHz.

According to Health Canada, this range covers the frequencies used by communications devices and equipment that emit radiofrequency EMF, including wi-fi, cell phones, smart meters and “those using 5G technology”.

5G health threats unfounded – CSIR

5G

With concerns around fifth-generation (5G) technologies being raised by citizens across social media in recent months, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has put to bed the theories surrounding the new technologies’ deployment on human health.
Over the past few months, discussions on whether 5G is harmful to citizens’ health have accelerated, leading to widespread fear that the new technology is causing the spread and mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as cancer, skin effects, electromagnetic hypersensitivity and male infertility.
However, many of these health threats are unfounded, based on pseudoscience, misinformation and fake news, said CSIR senior researcher Dr Essa Suleman.
Unpacking the myths surrounding 5G during a webinar, he explained that, based on the current available research, there is no evidence that 5G technologies pose health threats to humans.

“Many of the studies reporting alleged health effects associated with electromagnetic frequency (EMF) levels only observe possible negative effects when the levels are consistently higher than those emitted from 5G equipment and under very specific laboratory conditions.”

“There have been many different studies, some using animal models and some using human population level studies,” he noted, adding that that animal studies show possible carcinogenic effects, but at higher than normal EMF levels and under “very controlled laboratory conditions” which are not necessarily a reflection of real world conditions.

Human population level studies do not show strong correlation between EMF and cancer.

“However, as a precaution, despite the lack of evidence under real world conditions, I think further research is necessary, just to confirm that there is no significant threat to human health,” Suleman commented.

Meanwhile, he dismissed the conspiracy theories surrounding 5G and Covid-19, including that EMF radiation from 5G towers will weaken the immune system; that the roll-out of 5G technologies contributed to the spread and mutation of the Sars-CoV-2 virus; and that 5G chips will be included in the vaccines for governments to spy on and track citizens, besides others.

Suleman said these were false and that there is no correlation between 5G distribution and Covid-19 distribution, and there was no evidence to support any of the claims.

Further, CSIR chief researcher Dr Fisseha Mekuria said that wireless technology standards are highly regulated with checks and balances.

The CSIR, which has undertaken directed research on 5G technologies, assures that the number of checks and balances undertaken before a new technology is commercialised is significant to ensure that health is not compromised.

Health concerns are studied during the standardisation process of any new technology, with the technology also having to go through several research and development phases with innovation labs, universities, industry associations and regulators, besides others, before being peer-reviewed internationally and investigated and tested in depth at worldwide forums.

The long, extensive process is to ensure that all the checks and balances are in place and that any new technology is not harmful to any population before being commercialised.
